In a speech at the Super Speed USB Developers Confernce in San Jose announced Raven Jeff Craft, president of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) that the USB 3.0 transfer rates to ten times faster than USB 2.0. USB 3.0 is specifically for future devices to use, where multimedia plays an important role and hence the need for high transfer rate exists.
For comparison, currently takes the transfer of 1 GB of data on a USB 2.0 device about 33 seconds. The time should be a flash-based USB 3.0 device to reduce approximately 3.3 seconds. As another example, Raven Craft called the transfer a two hour movie from a PC to a portable USB 3.0 flash disk, which is less than a minute to be.
At the conference were already USB 3.0 devices presents, but "only" a transfer speed of 3 gigabits per second and is not reached by the USB-IF USB 3.0 propagated speed of 5 gigabits per second. It is however expected that up to the availability of equipment and the transfer speed yet on the announced value is improved. The theoretical maximum speed of USB 2.0 is located at 480 megabits per second (high speed).
The new specifications for USB 3.0 that has the USB-2.0-successor even better power-saving features. Joined, but do not use USB 3.0 devices can be in a virtual sleep time.
Microsoft announced at the Super Speed USB Developers Confernce on that future Windows operating systems, the transfer rate of USB 3.0 via a new protocol will support. Which older versions of Windows, the USB 3.0 support will be added, was a Microsoft representative at this time, however, remains open.
USB 3.0 is USB 2.0 backward compatible to reach higher speeds, the devices through a new protocol to be addressed. The first USB 3.0 devices will be 2010 on the market. Manufacturers now can be found on www.usb.org the specifications for USB 3.0.
